Gaps
in Housing Assistance Coverage for Hurricane Victims?
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) and the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) are seeking help in identifying gaps in the housing assistance coverage currently being provided to Hurricane Katrina victims by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. According to the CBPP and NLIHC, "We are concerned that some people will get little or no assistance under the program as proposed, but in order to convince Congress to take corrective action, we will need evidence that these are real problems on the ground."
The groups are collecting as much information as possible through
October 19. For details, please visit http://www.nlihc.org/mtm/mtm10-40.html#9
In
Memoriam: Zenobia Embry-Nimmer
Zenobia Embry-Nimmer, one of the most stellar advocates for poor and homeless people in California's Alameda County, passed away last month after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 57. Among many achievements, Ms. Embry-Nimmer served as the executive director of the Emergency Services Network from 1989 to 1993, successfully advocating for the replacement of over 1,000 units of affordable housing after they were destroyed in the 1989 earthquake.
